Eligibility
The general eligibility criteria for higher education are defined in section 37 of the Universities Act (558/2009) and the eligibility criteria for master’s applicants at Aalto University are defined in the Aalto University Student Admission Criteria. The rolling admissions procedure follows the eligibility criteria for master’s programmes as set in the Aalto University Student Admission Criteria. All applicants are required to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency in English. The English proficiency requirements for master’s applicants are set in the Aalto University Student Admission Criteria.
Applicants who have accepted a study place, are still on the waiting list for a study place in the general Aalto University admissions process, or who already have a valid study right at Aalto University for the same degree (Master of Science in Technology) are not eligible to apply in the rolling admissions.
Programme-specific selection criteria
Applicants who meet the general eligibility criteria in Aalto University admissions are evaluated and rated according to the following criteria. Admission to the programme is based on meeting the minimum required total score.
The minimum total score required for admission is 40 points. The total score is calculated using the following equation: 3 x criterion A points + 4 x criterion B points + 3 x criterion C points. Applications are processed and evaluated in the order they are received, and each applicant who earns the minimum total score is admitted until the quota is filled.
The selection criteria for rolling admissions to Automation and Electrical Engineering do not apply in the general Aalto University admissions for Automation and Electrical Engineering.
A highâ€quality Bachelor’s degree in one of the fields listed below is required. Applicants with other degrees/majors than the ones mentioned here are not eligible in the rolling admission. Applicants with the relevant degree are evaluated and rated accordingly.
5 points:
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electronics with a specialization area or major in a field related to the Automation and Electrical Engineering programme (eg. major/specialization in automation, electrical power engineering, digital systems, robotics, control engineering etc.).
- A major or specialization area means that the applicant has completed several courses within their degree that deepen their foundational knowledge of the subject area. The specialization area or major must be mentioned in the degree certificate or the transcript or the transcript must clearly indicate the advanced courses as separate individual courses.
4 points:
- A general electrical engineering bachelor’s degree with no particular area of specialization
- Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science or physics
- A Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degree in electrical engineering, automation or electronics with Mathematical Methods in Electrical Engineering and Automation Technology course (15 ECTS) with minimum grade of 3 (Metropolia UAS)
3 points:
- A bachelor’s degree in information technology or mathematics
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with courses in robotics and/or mechatronics
- A Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degrees in electrical engineering, automation or electronics
The following background knowledge is required for the majors:
- Control, Robotics and Autonomous Systems:
- basics of control engineering
- Electrical Power and Energy Engineering:
- circuit theory (including three-phase systems)
- electricity and magnetism
- basics of electronics and electronic components
- Electronic and Digital Systems:
- No major-specific required knowledge.
The Master’s programme should provide the applicant with genuinely new knowledge. Applicants with a previous Master’s degree of comparable quality and content in the fields of the Master’s Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering or who intend to complete one, or who have a valid study right in this application target will not be accepted to the programme.
The weighted GPA in the degree granting eligibility is evaluated on ECTS scale 0-5 (with 5 as the highest score). Applicants with a GPA below the listed threshold (3.8) are not eligible for admission in the rolling admissions. GPAs above 3.8 are evaluated and rated as follows:
| GPA on ECTS scale 0-5 | Points |
| 4.6 - 5.0 | 5 |
| 4.2 - 4.6 | 4 |
| 3.8 - 4.2 | 3 |
Applicants who have studied or are studying in Aalto University as an exchange student:
- Either the GPA of the home university bachelor’s studies or the GPA of the studies completed in Aalto University is considered: the GPA giving the higher points is used in the evaluation
- For the Aalto GPA to be eligible for consideration in the rolling admissions process, the applicant must have completed at least 20 cr / semester during the exchange. At least two courses must be from a subject area relevant to the Automation and Electrical Engineering programme / ELEC courses.
- If the exchange studies are still ongoing during the rolling admission period, and the applicant wants their Aalto University GPA to be considered as part of the evaluation, they may apply based on their incomplete Aalto University exchange studies. If the applicant fulfills the requirements for admission (minimum total score), then their admission is conditional until their Aalto University exchange studies are completed.
The applicant’s previous degree will be evaluated based on the international reputation and academic quality of the university and the programme.
Points are given based on the position of the university (higher education institution) where the applicant has completed the degree granting eligibility in international rankings according to the chart below. If the institution is not found in the below rankings, it will be rated 2 points.

How to apply?
Submit your application as soon as possible during the application period.
The application consists of:
- an online application form; and
- a set of required application documents
- Fill in the online application form in the national Studyinfo.fi system. You can fill in the application form only during the application period from 13.4.2026– 28.5.2026.
- Pay the application fee by the given deadline (if applicable)
- Upload all application documents to your application and submit your application form before 28.5.2026.
The link to the application form will be updated to this webpage closer to the start of the application period. Please note that the application form may be closed before the final application deadline if all available study places are filled earlier.
You may have only one application form; do not fill in several forms. You cannot save your application form as a draft.
You can only submit the application when you have filled in all required information and uploaded all required documents to the online application. Only complete applications are evaluated.
Required application documents
The required application documents are defined in the Aalto University Student Admission Criteria.
During the application stage, electronic copies of your original documents are sufficient. If you are admitted to the programme, you will be required to submit officially certified (attested) copies of your educational documents by the given deadline.
Carefully scan the documents in the correct orientation (horizontal documents are displayed in landscape orientation, etc.) and save them in color PDF format. Name the files as instructed (e.g. Transcript-lastname-firstname). Upload each document separately to the correct attachment section on your application form.
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Upload a scanned colour copy of your original Bachelor’s degree certificate in PDF format. Name the file according to format: Degree-certificate-lastname-firstname.
- The degree certificate must include the name of the student, the name of the degree, the name of the institution awarding the degree, and the date the degree was awarded.
- A diploma supplement cannot be submitted instead of a degree certificate. A degree certificate is required.
Provisional degree certificate
In the case there is a delay before the final degree certificate is issued to graduates, a provisional degree certificate can be accepted. A provisional (or temporary) degree certificate can be issued to a student who has graduated by successfully completing all the studies included in the degree.
The provisional degree certificate must include the same information as the degree certificate would, that is, the name of the student, the name of the degree, the name of the institution awarding the degree, and the date the degree was awarded. A statement of completion of the studies is insufficient. The graduation date must be no later than 31 July 2026.
Is your degree still incomplete?
If your degree is unfinished at the application phase, leave the upload attachment section for degree certificate blank. The degree must be completed and you must graduate by 31 July 2026.
Upload a scanned colour copy of your original official Bachelor's degree transcript of study records in PDF format. Name the file according to format: Transcript-lastname-firstname.
The transcript of records must be official. It must include the individual courses you have taken, the grades and credits awarded, and the completion dates. Original transcripts are generally easy to obtain from the student services department of your home institution. You must upload your transcript of records to your application form in PDF format.
If grades are not listed in your transcript of records, include an official document issued by your university that lists your grades for each course. If your institution does not award grades for courses, submit an official document issued by your university that explains their evaluation system.
You can also submit a diploma supplement instead of a transcript of records if it contains the information required of a transcript of records (individual courses, grades, credits and the date of completion of courses).
If your degree contains studies completed in some other higher education institution (e.g. transfer studies), the required information must be submitted also of those studies (individual courses, grades, credits, date of completion of courses). If this information is not included in your transcript of records, submit a transcript of records issued by the institution where the studies were taken at.
This requirement also applies to top-up -degrees. You must submit transcripts of records including the required information for the whole duration of all studies that your top-up -degree is based on. Studies must be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits or three years of full-time study.
Please note that unofficial documents, including screenshots from a student information system, My Studyinfo or similar platforms, as well as links directing to such services, are not accepted. All educational documents must be submitted as high-quality scans of the original official documents.
You need to demonstrate your language proficiency in the language of instruction of your study option.
See the accepted methods to demonstrate your language proficiency and instructions for submitting language test scores at Language requirements in Master's admissions.
In rolling admissions the language test scores must be submitted ÄûÃʵ¼º½ University at the same time with other application documents.
NB! the new scoring scale of the ETS test provider will be taken into account for TOEFL tests taken from 21.1.2026 onwards. Information about the required scores according to the new scoring scale will be available after 16 March 2026.
If the language of your original degree certificate and transcript of records is other than English, Finnish or Swedish, upload scanned colour copies of their authorised translations in PDF format. Name the file according to format: Translation-transcript-lastname.
The documents must be in English, Finnish or Swedish. If the original degree certificate or transcript of records was written in another language, you must submit an official translation of the document.
The translation is official if it has been done by the higher education institution that awarded the degree or by a certified translator (authorised translator). The translations must have the certified translator’s stamp and signature.
If you are looking for an authorised translator in Finland, you can check the Finnish National Agency for Education (www.oph.fi/en) of authorised translators based in Finland. We accept authorised translations from any country.
Diploma Supplement
A diploma supplement cannot be submitted instead of a degree certificate. A degree certificate is required. A diploma supplement in English can be submitted as a translation of a degree certificate, if it contains the name of the student, the name of the degree, the name of the institution awarding the degree, and the date the degree was awarded.
You can also submit a diploma supplement instead of a transcript of records if it contains the information required of a transcript of records (individual courses, grades, credits and the date of completion of courses).
You can find more information on diploma supplement on the .
If you have, in addition to a Bachelor's degree, another higher education degree you wish to be considered in the admissions, upload scanned colour copies of your degree certificate and official transcript of records.
If the language of the original documents is other than English, Finnish or Swedish, scanned colour copies of authorised translations are required.
Unofficial documents, including screenshots from a student information system, My Studyinfo or similar platforms, as well as links directing to such services, are not accepted. All educational documents must be submitted as high-quality scans of the original official documents.
Upload the documents in PDF format to "Other Higher Education Degree" section of the application form.

The ‘one study place per term’ provision
If you apply in several admissions and are offered admission to more than one degree programme beginning in the same term, you may only accept one offer of admission at a university or university of applied sciences in Finland. The ‘’ provision applies to all degree-granting higher education programmes, whether applying through: joint application procedures, separate admissions procedures, or applying to doctoral education (to earn a licentiate or doctoral degree).
If you are admitted to more than one degree programme in different admissions, you may only accept one admission offer. You cannot cancel the acceptance of a study place.
Admitted applicants are required to submit officially certified (attested) educational documents. If you are required to submit certified documents, it is written in your admission letter. The deadline for submitting the documents is 14 August 2026 15.00/3pm (UTC +3).
The documents must be received by the deadline. The deadline cannot be extended.
- Read the instructions for certified documents after admission results.
- Admitted applicants must note the country-specific document requirements.
There is a country-specific document requirement also for studies completed in Finland.
Applicants are conditionally admitted until the certified documents have been received.
If the certified documents, or the documents required according to the country-specific document requirements, are not received in the required manner by the given deadline, the conditional study right will be cancelled.
We strongly recommend submitting the certified documents as soon as you receive your admission offer; postal or courier service delivery takes time.
Certified documents will be compared to the electronic application documents you uploaded on your application form at the application phase.
