Non-degree studies in language and communication studies

Individuals other than degree students at Aalto University, including Aalto staff, can apply for a non-degree study right at the Language Centre.

If you are interested in completing language and communication studies at Aalto University, please see the course offering and apply for the studies primarily through Aalto University Open University. The Language Centre may also grant non-degree study rights if there is room in the teaching groups. 

Non-degree studies are free of charge for Aalto University staff, but for other individuals, the fee for non-degree studies is 45 euros/1 ECTS. The fees are based on the Government Decree 1082/2009 and 199/2024, and decision of the vice president for education on fees for Open university and non-degree studies (4/2025).

Please note: non-degree study rights are not generally granted for Finnish language courses, as the courses are very popular and reserved for Aalto University's degree and exchange students as well as Open University students.

How to apply for a non-degree study right

Complete the non-degree study right application form, which can be downloaded from the bottom of this page, and send the application to languagecentre@aalto.fi

Paying the fee for non-degree studies 

If you're granted a non-degree study right, the Language Centre will send you payment instructions for paying the course fee. After you have paid the fee and submitted a receipt for the payment, your study right is registered and you're enrolled for the course. The course registration is binding.
