Students from around the world joined the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology – meet Dylan, Anna and Ishaan

In September 2018, we received 39 new students in the Data Science and Digital Systems and Design majors that are part of the Aalto Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Technology taught in English. About one third of the new students in this programme are from Finland, while the rest are from countries like Vietnam, South Korea, India, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Russia, Italy and the USA.

Professor Esko Kauppinen is the first Finnish recipient of a UNESCO Nanosciences Medal

The award was presented to Esko Kauppinen in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of nanosciences and nanotechnologies. Kauppinen’s research focuses on carbon nanomaterials and carbon nanobuds.

Brain maps reveal: cuddles with loved ones are universal – but hugging strangers depends on culture

According to a recent doctoral study, cultural differences regarding physical touch between close partners are smaller than was believed. Different cultures are more comfortable with different levels of contact from strangers, and what counts as acceptable physical contact in public spaces changes based on where you are. The brain data also reveals whether the relationship between the person touching and the one being touched is close or not.

Quantum physics and technology research receives billion-euro funding from the EU — Aalto University involved in three projects

Aalto University research groups will study and develop technology for quantum communication, ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors based on quantum optics, and photon-emitting quantum chips. The Quantum Flagship launched by the European Union will provide funding for ten years and for over 5000 researchers with one billion euros. The flagship will consolidate the best quantum physics research in Europe and transfer quantum technology from the lab to the market.
