Sustainability Action Booster

Combining community, sauna, and circular prototyping

The grantees successfully built the world’s first a floating dock sauna using repurposed wind turbine blades and sustainably sourced wood. This innovative, accessible, and community-driven structure promotes sustainable materials by reducing reliance on high-emission dock construction.

Located at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus (Otaranta 9), the floating sauna is now open to all, offering a unique space for social connection, cultural exchange, and relaxation. Inspired by Helsinki’s Sompasauna, it provides a place to enjoy the Finnish sauna tradition and, for the bold, an occasional dip in ice-cold water.

The project brought together students from design, business, and engineering, showcasing the power of cross-disciplinary collaboration. It fostered community, raised awareness of sustainable construction, and demonstrated the creative potential of repurposing wind turbine blades — addressing a pressing global challenge.

We’re thrilled to see this pioneering vision come to life — and to welcome everyone to experience it!
