An audit is an independent evaluation conducted by an external audit team. The focus of the audit is on the procedures used by the university to maintain and enhance the quality of its activities. The unit undergoing audit/accreditation conducts self-assessment and data collection according to the guidelines provided by the auditor. Based on the collected materials and evaluation visits, the assessment team evaluates the activities and produces an evaluation report with development recommendations. Upon successful evaluation, the auditing or accreditation body grants a quality label. The implementation of development measures identified during audits and accreditations is monitored in University reviews alongside results from other evaluations and feedback.

Aalto University's quality system was audited in 2023 by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre, FINEEC (Karvi). The next quality system audit is carried out in 2029.

Accreditation is the act of granting credit or recognition, especially to an educational institution that maintains suitable international standards. Accreditation is the verification of competence based on international criteria and a sign of high-quality education, continuous development and international recognition.  As the first Nordic business school, Aalto University School of Business holds the Triple Crown status (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS) which is an honour held by only a few business schools worldwide.

In 2025, Aalto University participated in the Finnish Olympic Committee's audit process, which aims to streamline the studies of top athletes during their sports careers. The audit seeks to develop a smoother and more flexible dual career path, enabling athlete-students to succeed both in their studies and in their sports careers.

Aalto University also participates in various international ranking comparisons, which are used as tools for monitoring one's own positioning and strategic work, for example.
