Process Systems Engineering

The Process Systems Engineering group, led by Prof. Iiro Harjunkoski combines elements from Chemical Engineering, Operations Research and Computer Science in solving problems related to planning and scheduling optimization of production processes and related supply chains. The integration of process and energy systems considering sustainability and strengthening circular economy are of special interest.
PSE covers many research topics and objectives under the "optimization umbrella"

The group of Process Systems Engineering (PSE) is working on classical topics such as planning and scheduling, supply chain optimization and mathematical optimization of chemical processes and related operational problems with a special attention to energy topics. Special fields of focus are:

  1. Process electrification: Converting processes powered by fossil fuels to those driven by electricity, either directly or indirectly, increases reliance on the fluctuating electricity supply and markets. However, it also opens up opportunities for more flexible operations by utilizing energy storage and collaborating with power grids. Investment decisions and the transformation process can be optimized, even when considering future uncertainties such as electricity pricing.
  2. Sustainable supply chains: Currently, a significant amount of material is being discarded without properly assessing its potential for reuse or recycling. By evaluating and optimizing different scenarios for integrating processes and value chains at a systems level, we anticipate a substantial increase in the reuse of raw materials and a reduction in environmental burden.
  3. Hybrid methods for optimizing large-scale problems: For large and complex mathematical optimization problems, we are reaching the limits of what standard tools can solve effectively. Hybrid methods integrate traditional mathematical solvers with techniques such as heuristics, decomposition methods, and machine learning tools, applied in both the modeling and solution phases

Other topics of interest are waste supply chain management, application of mixed integer linear and non-linear programming methods, and extending the PSE methods to new applications to improve sustainability with simultaneous focus and profitability and operability.

Events & Conferences

Here we list activities that the group members are participating at, e.g. conference presentations

Monthly Seminar Series on Process Systems Engineering

We host a monthly seminar series on various topics in PSE. The seminars are open to the public, will take place monthly, and shall provide an opportunity for researchers, students, and practitioners to learn and discuss emerging topics from process systems engineering.

The entire Aalto community (and beyond!) is invited to subscribe to our mailing list, where we will send calendar invitations, announcements, and related materials: .

We are also open for outside presenters so if you are interested please contact Otacilio.
