MSc, MBA, Doctoral Researcher.

Gianluca Giabardo is a designer, researcher, and sourdough baker working at his practice-led Doctoral research at Aalto University.
His doctoral research develops symbiotic conviviality as an ethical and methodological reorientation of design practice, from controlling materials toward making-with them. The work asks how sustained engagement with multi-actor bread baking generates methodologies for co-existing survival.
The research is grounded in Panicuocoli, a commercial organic bakery Gianluca operated in Helsinki from 2020 to 2024. Working with locally sourced grains, sourdough cultures, and seasonal rhythms, the bakery served as both research site and method.
Four years of daily practice revealed how knowledge emerges through attunement rather than mastery.
The dissertation reframes form as a relational process emerging through multi-actor negotiations rather than designer intention; proposes acknowledgement as an epistemic practice for working with agencies that exceed human comprehension; and develops emergent prototyping as a methodology where practices prototype themselves through their own unfolding.

Before moving to Finland in 2018, Gianluca co-founded Studio Dossofiorito with Livia Rossi (2012 to 2018), a design practice exploring human and plant cohabitation through objects, installations, and workshops.
He has taught at Aalto as university teacher and designer in residence.

Gianluca holds an MSc in Industrial Design from Politecnico di Milano (with studies at ABK Stuttgart and UIAH Helsinki through the MEDes exchange programme) and an MBA.
