Methodology for HCI evaluations of possible futures (2020 -2024)
Human–computer interaction (HCI) research has a unique ability to critically studying possible futures by building interactive prototypes and evaluating them in possible futures. While this allows researchers to “time-travel” to these futures, HCI methodology has failed to take full advantage of this unique strength. We will integrate future foresight methods into three stages of HCI evaluation: 1) to envisioning of societally important possible futures that should be evaluated; 2) to systemic enriching of future visions into holistic scenarios; and 3) to projecting the empirical evaluation findings rigorously ”back to the futures”. With these activities, our project seeks to reconceptualize HCI evaluations and make them better informed.
