2. Nonreciprocal Photonics with Metamaterials [Position code: ASADCHY / TBA_2]

Antenna and field measurements for future-generation radio systems [Position code: HANEDA / MEAS] 

Do you have a good background in electronics as well as basic experience in practical measurements, such as with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators or in an anechoic chamber? We seek summer trainees to help with various research activities in microwave and Terahertz engineering for future-generation radio systems under the supervision of senior researchers. The trainee will obtain solid experience in practical radio-frequency systems and measurements. For example, in the last year, a summer trainee worked to design, fabricate, and measure antennas for aircraft-to-ground cellular radio link measurements. Another summer trainee programmed a software-defined radio to demonstrate high-data-rate video image transfer between inside and outside a human body for medical applications. Furthermore, there was a large measurement campaign at the Helsinki city center to reveal radio signal coverage of future cellular frequency bands. Some of the works are in collaboration with industry. You can be a Master or Bachelor level student. After the summer work, the trainee may be able to claim credits as a special assignment, a special project or a bachelor’s thesis by summarizing their results into a scientific report. A successful trainee may be able to continue in the fall as a part-time or master’s thesis worker with salary support.

3. Antenna design for wireless devices [Position code: VIIKARI / ANTDES]
   
   Are you interested in wireless technology and antennas? We offer summer jobs in antenna design, simulation, and measurements for modern wireless devices.
   
   You’ll get to work with advanced antenna arrays that can steer radio waves—key technology for radars, sensing and intelligence applications, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). These are also key building blocks for future 6G systems, making this a great opportunity to work with cutting-edge topics.
   
   As part of our team, your work may consist of tasks such as: modelling and theoretical analysis (electromagnetic field and circuit theory), running EM or circuit simulations with commercial software, prototyping antennas in ELEC’s workshop, and measuring antennas in our MVG Starlab or radio-wave anechoic chamber.
   
   Depending on your interests, you may also complete the experimental part of a special assignment or Bachelor’s thesis, or work on Master’s thesis during the summer. We welcome motivated students from all study years.

1. Millimeter-wave Integrated Circuits [Position code: RYYNANEN / mmWaveIC]
   
   The future digitally intensive communication systems, integrated radars and other sensing devices will operate at microwave frequencies. Successful circuit and system design requires scrutinized study on device details, circuit principles, and optimum system-level architectures. Our research group (Kari Stadius & Jussi Ryynänen) is tackling these challenges and designs state-of-the-art integrated microwave circuits using FinFET and GaN technologies. A summer trainee joins our group and contributes to design and/or measurement campaigns of a specific circuit under guidance of a senior designer. We seek for students that are enthusiastic on high-frequency IC design. You may be at B.Sc. or M.Sc. level, and the tasks will be tailored accordingly.    Our research group (Kari Stadius & Jussi Ryynänen) is developing device models and integrated electronics for Josephson transistors. 1. Open-source RISC-V microprocessor and accelerator development [Position code: KOSUNEN / IC_PROCESSING]
   
   Are you the one born with enthusiasm towards programming and microprocessors? This is the dream job for you. RISC-V is an open-source microprocessor instruction set, which has gained enormous interest in academia and industry. In Aalto, Department of Electronics and nanoengineering, Aalto Microelectronics Research Center, we have developed our own open-source RISC-V core implementation that we can use as a controller in our mixed-mode System-on-Chip designs. Simultaneously we provide hands-on education on Digital SoC design to fulfill the rapidly growing need of Finnish electronics industry.
   
   In this work we start from the basics. Successful execution of the work requires willingness to learn fluent Unix working habits, Git version control, shell scripting, Python, and Scala/Chisel programming, complemented with entry level knowledge of analog design tools and methodology. Topic focuses on improving current RISC-V implementation and merging it with digital and analog signal processing, signal processing accelerators, and sensor interfaces possibly advancing to implementation on silicon or verification on FPGA according to your preferences. Programmatic design methodology aims to provide parametrized and optimized analog building blocks for these needs. Berkeley Analog Generator is a design environment recently developed in University of Berkeley which enables analog circuit design by programmatic means. 1. Applications of quantum computing in optimization and cryptography [Position code TITTONEN / MQS_1]
   
   One of the main near-term applications of quantum computers is optimization. Several different methods exist from quantum annealing to hybrid quantum-classical algorithms. In our research group we study the application of these methods to various real-world optimization problems. The development of quantum computing has also major consequences for cryptography. On the one hand, quantum computing poses a threat to the current commonly used public-key protocols, such as RSA, due to the existence of efficient quantum algorithms for the discrete logarithm and the factoring problems. On the other hand, quantum computing provides new opportunities for cryptography through the use of quantum computers and channels for encrypting and decrypting data.
   
   Your task during this summer project is to familiarize yourself with the current research and provide implementations of quantum algorithms for research purposes. The applicant is required to have some background in quantum computing at the level of the course ELEC-C9440 Quantum Information. Background in cryptography and/or machine learning is a definite advantage.

2. MSc-Level Summer Research Opportunities in Thermoelectric Materials and Applications [Position code: TITTONEN / MQS_2]
   
   We are seeking enthusiastic MSc-level studentsin the fields of Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Chemical Engineering to join research project focused on thermoelectric materials based on 2D materials and III-V nitrides.
   
   Our research focuses on the integration of low-dimensional materials, such as MoS₂, WS₂, and MoTe₂, and III-V nitride semiconductors (e.g., GaN and AlN) to develop high-performance thermoelectric materials for energy harvesting and cooling applications. Our goal is to optimize thermoelectric properties like Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and maybe thermal conductivity. The work specifically explores nanoscale engineering techniques, such as atomic layer deposition (ALD), and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), to fabricate and optimize thermoelectric materials. By tailoring parameters like grain size, crystallinity, and composition.
   
   The role involves practical experiments to synthesize innovative thermoelectric nanomaterials and physical property characterization (electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity measurements). Depending on the candidate’s preferences, the focus can be on either developing new materials or their energy applications. 
   
   This opportunity can be even extended to a thesis work.

Organic Devices: Materials and Interfaces [Position code: SOLDANO / ORGANIC]

The Organic Electronics Group is looking for a curious and talented student, preferably at MSc level, for the summer 2026. 

The field of Organic Electronics exploits organic molecules and their optical and electronic properties to develop functional electronic devices. You will contribute to the advance of organic thin film transistor, thus a relevant background in semiconductor physics or similar is highly desired. Your role will be to fabricate thin films (dielectrics and semiconductors), fabricate and characterize electronic devices to understand fundamental physical phenomena. Experimental work includes growth of materials, studies of surfaces, device fabrication and characterization.
