Where are your student overalls?
Student overalls bring back memories of Vappu celebrations and good times. Do you remember how to tune your overalls, or what it means to change a leg?
In the Teekkari Village in Otaniemi, the student restaurant Täffä – run by Teknologföreningen (TF), the Swedish-speaking student nation at Aalto University – cooks around 200 kilos of spaghetti and 300 litres of sauce every Wednesday. A typical portion weighs about half a kilo, but many people go back for seconds. In one eating contest, the winner ate over 2.5 kilos of spaghetti.
Täffä has also “won” the spaghetti wars. When other restaurants in Otaniemi started offering Wednesday spaghetti, inspired by Täffä’s popularity, there was some competition. In the end, they agreed that only Täffä would serve spaghetti on Wednesdays. The restaurant’s record is 1,600 lunches in one day – more than twice as many as on a normal weekday.
Täffä is not just about food. For decades, it has brought students together across different fields. Many people who studied in the Helsinki area still remember the parties, dancing under mirror balls, and the shared moments at Täffä.

Wappu is the highlight of student life – and it wouldn’t be Wappu without Manta. For over a century, this ever-youthful maiden has been at the centre of student celebrations across generations.
What would Wappu be without Äpy or Julkku? Published every other year, these May Day magazines are an essential part of students’ biggest celebration of the spring.
In the 1960s, Finnish technical students made an unprecedented master prank, which is still unparalleled today.
Welcome for a trip down Aalto memory lane!
