Enhancing liveability in small shrinking cities
Based on the discussion during the workshops in two case study cities, we developed a set of recommendations for local practitioners in small shrinking cities. We hope that also other communities can learn from these discussions and use these outcomes while searching for solutions for their own challenges.
Enhancing liveability in small shrinking and peripheral towns - the examples of Puolanka (Finland) & Lauscha (Germany)
This project has been examining local initiatives and practices of placemaking in the towns of Puolanka (Finland) and Lauscha (Germany) for the duration of two years.

SMARTEDGE - AALTO (EU Horizon Europe 2023-2025) Smart Infrastructure to Vehicle Use Case
The objective of the SMARTEDGE project is to enable so called Swarm Intelligence i.e. a dynamic integration of decentralised edge intelligence at runtime while ensuring reliability, security, privacy and scalability. This will achieved by enabling a semantic-based interplay of the edge devices via a cross-layer toolchain that facilitates the seamless and real-time creation and orchestration of autonomous intelligence swarm. Hence, applications can be freely built by distributing the processing, data fusion and control across heterogeneous sensors, devices and edges with ubiquitous low-latency connectivity. The goal is to provide solutions in a low-code programming environment using various tools:
(1) Continuous Semantic Integration (CSI)
(2) Dynamic Swarm Network (DSW)
(3) Low-code Edge Intelligence (LEI)
The SMARTEDGE solution will be comprehensively demonstrated over four application areas: automotive, smart city, factory and health via the strong collaboration of industrial partners like Dell, Siemens, Bosch, IMC, Conveqs, Cefiel and NVIDIA together with esearch institutes including Aalto University, Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) and others. Aalto University will mostly contribute to the use cases related to traffic management.
