Aalto ARTS books awarded as most beautiful of 2017 by the Finnish Book Art Committee
The Finnish Book Art Committee selected "Sick Photography - Representations of Sickness in Art Photography" by Maija Tammi as one of the most beautiful books of 2017 in the category of non fiction. The award-winning graphic design for the volume was done by Jesper Vuori, with photographs by Maija Tammi.
The selection committee praised the book as a "bold and inventive outlook on a doctoral thesis," in which the interaction of photographs and typography "preserve both readability and enjoyment". Maija Tammi is an artist and photographer whose works often address the topics of disgust and fascination, science and aesthetics. She received her doctorate in December 2017 from Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Sick Photography is her published dissertation.
The Finnish Book Art Committee also selected Lost in the Wood(s), edited by Pirjo Kääriäinen and Liisa Tervinen, with graphic design by Safa Hovinen, as one of the best book covers of the year.
Pirjo Kääriäinen is professor of practice, design-driven fibre innovation at Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
