Aalto University Magazine in search of hope

The new issue of Aalto University Magazine is out now. The magazine invites readers to reflect on where hope comes from in a time marked by uncertainty and rapid change.

The theme echoes Aalto University’s spring exhibition Laboratory of Hope, on display at Marsio until 27 March.

In the Openings article, Brynna Justice, a member of the AYY Student Union Board and a student in the Creative Sustainability master’s programme, says that students’ diverse hopes and dreams come together in Otaniemi. ‘What we hope for together as individuals is what makes our community special. – – This shared hope makes us resilient, courageous, and creative.’

In the feature article, the journalist sets out to find hope on the university campus and meets fashion designer Enni Lähderinne, doctoral researcher Ali Salloum, and Academy Research Fellow Johanna Ahola-Launonen. For all of them, hope can also serve as a practical resource in developing new solutions.

In the Who section’s alumni interview, Doctor of Science (Technology) Yuri Kroyan talks about his work at the energy company Neste and about how the world can be changed through statistical modelling.

The On the go report takes readers on a tour underground. Beneath Otaniemi runs a network of tunnels where, among other things, rock engineering is taught.

In the Everyday choices column, Associate Professor and philosopher Frank Martela answers the question: is happiness a serious matter?

Aalto University Magazine is published twice a year in Finnish and English. The magazine is freely available from distribution racks on the Otaniemi campus in the following buildings: Väre, Marsio, Dipoli, lobbies of the Schools, the Undergraduate Centre, and the Harald Herlin Learning Centre.

You can also read the magazine online at: aalto.fi/magazine.

From autumn 2026 onwards, a subscription to the printed magazine will cost €10 per year.

If you would like to receive the September issue directly to your home, subscribe now at: aalto.fi/magazine. We will send you the payment instructions well in advance of the autumn issue.
