Aalto University received EUR 15.9 million from the Academy of Finland September call

Most of the funding went to the field of natural sciences and engineering.

From April to June, Aalto University has received a total of EUR 15.9 million in funding from the Academy of Finland through the application call which ended in September 2017. Aalto University received funding for nine Academy Research Fellows, eleven Post-Doctoral Researchers and 22 Academy Projects. The majority of funding came from the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering: Aalto University received one fifth of their financing decisions. New projects, researchers and post-doctoral researchers were also granted by the research councils for culture and society, biosciences and environment, and health.

‘Natural sciences and engineering rely on strong basic research, and they benefit society and business life in different ways. Finnish research in the field of technology is of an internationally high standard in, for example, electrical engineering and electronics, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering. This year, the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering received many high-quality applications. The Aalto University School of Science succeeded excellently, in particular the Department of Applied Physics. Also the School of Electrical Engineering offered projects of a delightfully high quality’, says Sirkka Jämsä-Jounela, Aalto University Professor and member of the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering at the Academy of Finland.

On 18 June, the Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering at the Academy of Finland granted nearly 40 million euros in funding to a total of 88 Academy Projects. Sixteen of the projects are from Aalto University, which counts for 18% of all projects.
