Aalto University successful in engineering subjects in ShanghaiRanking

Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering made it to the top 75 in the global ranking.

Aalto University was placed high in the world university ranking of engineering subjects published by ShanghaiRanking in June.  Aalto University was most successful in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering, which made it to the best 51–75 in the world.  Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering were also among the best one hundred, ranking between 76 and 100.  Environmental Science & Engineering, as well as Energy Science & Engineering at Aalto University were placed among the best 200 in the world.

Aalto University’s position in the overall ranking published by ShanghaiRanking on 15 August (Academic Ranking of World Universities, ARWU, or the so called Shanghai list), remained the same 401–500 as before. Typically, the universities that succeed in overall rankings are those that have received a Nobel Prize at some point or that have published a large number of scientific articles. Because of publication practices, the universities that rank well in them are those that teach medicine or the natural sciences.

Field specific rankings important

Aalto University specialises in science & technology, business and art. That is why the rankings that are the most relevant for the university are the field or subject specific rankings.

For example, Art and Design at Aalto University was placed 17th in the subject specific QS World University Rankings published in March 2016. Architecture, Management, and Materials Science and Technology at Aalto University were among the best one hundred in the same ranking. Aalto University has also been placed high, for example, in the Financial Times rankings of business schools and Executive Education.
