Aalto 10 - Alumni Studio and the Science Show was hosted by Aalto alumni Johannes Tervo and Samuli Patala, who serves as an Assistant Professor of Management at the School of Business.

Anu Kaukovirta, Director of the Natural Resources Centre's Production Systems Program, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, Chairman of the Board of Sanoma and Huhtamäki, and Joonas Kyöstilä, Industrial Designer, participated in the Alumni Studio discussion.

The studio discussion was all about the big questions: how will unforeseen crises such as the corona pandemic, which are shaking social and economic structures globally, affect our ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030? What kind of trends and developments will take us towards these goals?

Two alumni of the year were also announced during the Alumni Studio discussion: Anu Kaukovirta, the School of Chemical Engineering Alumnus of the Year 2020, and Pekka Ala-Pietilä, the School of Business Alumnus of the Year 2020.

The Science Show brought four researchers with immersive stories onstage.

Paula Hohti Erichsen, Professor of Art and Cultural History, illustrated everything we can learn about the fashion and sustainability of past centuries with the help of one Renaissance-era silk sock.

Many of us remember the widespread pictures of a scenario in which a person infected with coronavirus coughs in a store aisle. Physicist Ville Vuorinen spoke about his droplet infection research, which became a viral online phenomenon earlier this year and was widely reported in large newspapers like BBC, CNN and Fox News.

Vertical growers and project researchers Pasi Herranen and Panu Miettinen spoke about their plans to feed the near-future Otaniemi students with lettuce grown in greenhouses built of wood.

A warm thank you to everyone who took part in the event!

We are interested in how our community experiences recent developments in the world and perceives the future. Therefore, we have created a brief survey to gather observations regarding weak signals and trends. The purpose of the survey is to collect raw material for Aalto University's strategy work.
