Aalto University ranked 8th globally in art and design in the QS World University Rankings by Subjects published on 10 April 2024. Last year’s ranking was 6th.

This field-specific ranking covers 55 academic subjects and close to 1600 universities around the world.

‘Art and design can provide new solutions to and perspectives on the world’s many challenges. It’s great to be recognised among the very best in the world in this area. A big thanks to our entire community,’ says Tuomas Auvinen, dean of the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

The university also ranked in the top 50 globally in three other fields. In the field of architecture and built environment, Aalto improved its ranking to 39th (48th last year). In marketing, Aalto placed in 21-50, and, in data science and AI, Aalto ranked 41st. Both these subjects were included in this ranking for the first time.

Also ranking in the top 100 were Aalto’s business and management studies in 100th place (76th last year) and computer science & information systems in 99th place (84th).

The QS World University Rankings by Subject emphasises a university's reputation both in the world of academia and among employers, as well as reflecting its research publications and citation numbers. The weighting of these factors in the rankings varies between subjects.

The QS World University Rankings also compare universities as a whole. In the latest ranking, published last summer, Aalto ranked 1st in Finland and 109th globally.

Aalto University specialises in technology, business studies and art, and thus the most relevant rankings for Aalto are field- and subject-specific. Depending on the criteria used, there are between 17000 and 22000 universities in the world.
