Academy Professor Paavo Alku named IEEE Fellow

The world’s largest technical association IEEE elevates Professor Paavo Alku to the status of IEEE Fellow, which is the institute’s highest member grade.

Professor Paavo Alku, Aalto University Department Signal Processing and Acoustics, has been named an IEEE Fellow active from January 2020. He is being recognized for his contributions to analysis, synthesis and quality improvement of speech signals. His main research areas are analysis and modelling of speech production and speech synthesis. In addition, his research results have been adopted in mobile phones and in many neuroscientific studies of speech processing in the human brain. Prof. Alku is currently an Academy Professor appointed by the Academy of Finland.

With over 400,000 members, the IEEE is the world’s largest association for technical professionals. The IEEE Fellowship is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed 0.01% of the total voting membership.

There are only about 20 IEEE Fellows in Finland, and many of them are former or current professors of Aalto University. The Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics has now four IEEE Fellows.
