Alumni Ambassador Daniel Tuori: I encourage everyone to think already during the studies what is it that you want to do later on in your career

The School of Business alumnus Daniel Tuori encourages students to use all the opportunities that the School offers to meet the alumni and company representatives during the studies. 鈥淚n those conversations, you might find new interesting career paths, or they can reaffirm your interests. Besides, broad networks have proven to be very useful in all phases of my career鈥, says Tuori.

When and what did you study at Aalto University School of Business?

I studied economic geography and marketing in the School of Business during the years 1983鈥1989.

In which positions have you worked after graduation?

I have worked in marketing communication planning, corporate design and management in different creative agencies. Today, I work as a Marketing and Communication Manager at Trevian Asset Management, which is a Finnish real estate investment and asset management company.

In what ways have the studies been useful for your career?

For me, the degree at the School of Business was more general than actually preparing me towards a specific profession. However, the School was a great place to get to know people and to practice different skills, such as leading an organization, for I took also part in KY鈥檚 activities.

Broad networks have proven to be very useful in all phases of my career.

Your advice for the students who reflect on their studies?

I encourage everyone to think already during the studies what is it that you want to do later on in your career. Do you want to be a specialist, a consultant or a manager? On the private, public or the third sector? Do you want to work independently or prefer working in a group? Do you want to work abroad? An exercise where you need to think about these things would be very useful for many 鈥 also for me at the time when I was studying.

You should also follow actively the news and use all the opportunities that the School and Aalto have to offer: visit the companies, talk to the alumni who are working in companies that interest you, change ideas with your fellow students and go abroad for an exchange period.

As the School鈥檚 alumnus, I feel that it is nice and rewarding to be able to help current students to proceed on their career paths.

Many students worry about finding their first job in the field. Do you have any advice for them?

Different mentoring programs (such as Suomen Mentorit and Aalto University Mentoring Program) are a good way for students and freshly graduated to discuss different issues with more experienced mentors. Via the mentoring, you can find new interesting career paths and by participating in a mentoring program, you may be able to access trainee opportunities, among many other things!

Creating networks is important, both face-to-face and online. Nowadays it is so easy to create new connections online (check , open for alumni and students!), and the connections create a good basis for future career. Being initiative is nevertheless important, and it is good to remember to be flexible in the beginning of your career, regarding the jobs and payment.
