Associate Professor Heikki Remes: Towards sustainable high-strength marine structures
Heikki Remes
Heikki Remes was appointed associate professor with tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering starting 1 August 2020. The field of his professorship is marine technology.
Professor Remes is appreciated for his holistic academic approach to high-strength marine structures, which combines fundamental research with novel teaching and engineering. His research expertise is on future lightweight structures, focusing on understanding mechanical behaviour and fatigue, from materials in microscale to large structures. In addition to scientific publications in top journals, his research has led to pioneering structural solutions in passenger ships.
Remes has been educating the next generation of scientists, with four of his former post-docs acting as professors in well-known universities. He is also a member of several scientific committees, leading a working group in the International Institute of Welding, the world-leading network for material joining. During his career, he has received several recognitions, including an honourable mention from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the Aalto Education Impact Award.
Heikki Remes received his Doctor of Science (Tech.) degree in Naval Architecture and Mechanics of Materials from Helsinki University of Technology in 2008. He was appointed as assistant professor of marine technology in Aalto University in 2014. Since then, he has been an invited professor at EPFL and a visiting researcher at TUHH and University of Waterloo.
