Cinema Sheryl opens its doors – New student-oriented cinema aiming at young people and film culture

The cinema brings a completely new, student-driven perspective to the movie experience – designed for and by young people.

Cinema Sheryl opened its doors to the audience on April 17 in Marsio, Otaniemi. The program started with the exclusive Finnish premiere of ENO - Gary Hustwit’s new documentary film of Brian Eno and his visionary mind. Screening followed by a workshop hosted by Vice Dean of Education, Rasmus Vuori and Head of Sound in New Media Programme, Antti Ikonen.

Cinema Sheryl, formerly known as Kino Sheryl in Arabia, Helsinki, is a student-run cinema where cult films, quality movies, and a communal viewing experience come together in Marsio’s unique space.

"Cinema Sheryl is a movie theater founded by students with a love for film. At Sheryl, you can experience quality films with top-tier presentation technology that will satisfy even the most dedicated movie fans.", explains Theater Manager Jimi Laaksonen.

"We want our program to be accessible to as many viewers as possible, which is why our prices are affordable, and we offer a significant student discount. Additionally, we aim to be a foreign-language-friendly cinema, offering films primarily with English subtitles.”

The idea behind the new Sheryl is to build a cultural space for young people and students that is both curious and easy to approach. There will be space for both classics, new creators, and alternative programming – while not forgetting the latest release films. The goal is also to collaborate with film festivals and student productions to create a place where experimentation and viewing go hand in hand.
