Communication and language courses for doctoral students in period I

The registration for the courses happens in Sisu and usually starts one month before. Registration period per course usually ends either one week before or one week after the start of the course, depending on the type of the course. Period I runs from 2 September to 20 October 2024.

Writing and presenting

LC-1350 Writing Doctoral Research for Engineering and Science aims to help doctoral students to develop their academic writing skills while writing up their research. Therefore, participants need to be in the process of writing either an article for publication or their dissertation. Students’ own texts form a key part of the course as they work to improve them. The overall aim of the course is to enable participants to write up their research more effectively and with greater confidence for an international readership.

until 23.59 on Aug 26. The next opportunity to take this course will be in period 2. That group will be on campus.

Time to let the general public know about your research!

Join us to work on one oral and one written project where you, for instance, prepare a press release about your research, rehearse for a TV or radio interview, or something else, relevant to you and your research.

until 23.59 on Oct 14.

This is a course aimed at supporting doctoral students (from any Aalto school) in developing skills in presenting their research. The course is intended for participants who will be presenting soon either at a conference or in a seminar. Students’ own presentations form a key part of the course. During the course, students plan, structure, and visualize their presentations and then practice giving them. The practice sessions include giving a rehearsal presentation, upon which feedback is given and then implemented before giving a final presentation. Participants also practice strategies for asking, receiving, and deflecting questions from the audience.

until Oct 17. The next opportunity to take this course will be in period 4.

Students will be introduced to different coping strategies for anticipating questions and responding in an assertive, professional manner. Students will also give and receive feedback on their visuals, content and language use.

until 23.59 on Aug 29. The next opportunity to take this course will be in period III.

Finnish and Swedish for foreigners

If your native language is not one of the national language in Finland, Finnish or Swedish, we wholeheartedly recommend improving your skills in these languages. Finnish and Swedish skills boost your employment in Finland and make it easier to understand Finnish culture. Most doctoral programmes allow you to include some credits of Finnish/Swedish studies in your degree, more information in the Curriculum 2024-2026.
