DBMC Alumna Svitlana Chaplinska: ‘The course exceeded all my expectations'

The spring edition of the Digital Business Master Class by Aalto University Summer School took place in March this year, and 30 students from China, Canada, Vietnam, Argentina, Italy and Tunisia, to name a few, were participating in this challenge-based course on digital technologies as tools for building businesses.

One of the alumni is Svitlana Chaplinska, who studies at the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Program in Security and Cloud Computing. She enjoys her campus experience at Aalto University as much as she can despite the coronavirus situation, before embarking on a new adventure at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm in August, as part of her Master’s studies.

Svitlana wanted to find a course where the combination of business, digital and some marketing and technology would align, and the Digital Business Master Class ticked all her boxes.

Svitlana, how did you experience the Digital Business Master Class this spring?

It may sound like a cliché, but the course has truly exceeded all my expectations. I have been attending online classes and courses through Zoom and Teams for an entire year now, and this was by far the best organised and most inspiring one! It was well-organised, and the communication between lecturer and students as well as among the students during our group projects was flawless. The general atmosphere during the lectures was easy-going and the main part of the focus lay on interaction, which helps you remember what you’ve learned.

The topics during the course vary between everything from AI and machine learning, platform business models, design and marketing.

‘The best part of the DBMC is that you get a basic know-how of such a broad spectrum of critical topics, and it is easy to then deep-dive even more into the ones you feel are closest to your interests or skill-sets.’ comments Svitlana.

The DBMC allows students to work on real-life business projects provided by Finnish companies and organisations during the course. Working together with a company partner offers meaningful connections with the industry for the future.

‘Although our team was spread over several different time zones, which sometimes was a tough nut to crack when scheduling meetings, we managed to maintain well-working communication and team spirit throughout the whole project. I have made real friends that I hope will stay in contact with for a long time onwards.’ says Svitlana.

Are you better prepared for working with digital strategies after the course, and where are you headed next?

I feel that I have a clearer vision about where I want to head in life and what I need to focus on career-wise. Also, the course’s timing couldn’t have been better – I am starting my internship as a  Cloud Developer at Ericsson next Monday and will definitely use all the knowledge I gained during my internship there.

I am open to new experiences and for change in my life in general. I feel really eager about applying everything I learned about digital business strategies to my career. It will most definitely help me on my path to becoming an expert in my field. For now, I hope I can visit my family and friends in Ukraine once the pandemic eases around the world.
