Fireworks filled the catwalk in Näytös19
Altogether twenty-six new, spectacular and inspiring collections by Aalto University fashion students were seen on the catwalk in the Näytös19 fashion show on Wednesday, 29 May in Helsinki’s Cable Factory. Twenty-two were graduate collections and four group collections.

Näytös Award: Ines Kalliala
MA student Ines Kalliala won the Näytös Award. The jury praised her menswear collection as deeply personal and responsibly made, combining hand work and technological touches.
As her inspiration for the collection Kalliala says it was an idea of blurring the presence of a person. “I was researching and thinking of the ways that we use garments to blend in, stand out, or identify ourselves. I wanted to explore this kind of in between state of being where you’re kind of merged with your surroundings; this relationship between a person and their environment.”
Marimekko Award: working group Elina Heilanen, Aleksandra Hellberg, Camilla Naukkarinen and Noora Vihervirta
Marimekko Award was given to menswear collection by a project group of BA students: Elina Heilanen, Aleksandra Hellberg, Camilla Naukkarinen and Noora Vihervirta. It was emphasized that the collection was new and interesting. “It presents a new way of combining denim, workwear and indigo dyeying,” says Marimekko's chief designer of clothing, bags and accessories, Satu Maaranen, who has also graduated from Aalto University.
Fiskars-palkinto: Alexander Luonto
"The Fiskars Award is given to a collection that is very straight forward, simple and proud. It contains interesting interpretations of functionality and the pieces combine surprising materials and elements", says Marika Orkamo, Senior Vice President, Brand and Marketing at Fiskars, announcing the winner, BA graduate Alexander Luonto.
Diesel-palkinto: Justus Kantakoski
The Diesel Award was given to MA student Justus Kantakoski. The award rationale emphasized the fine finishing and bold patterns of the collection. Diesel is a long-term partner of Aalto's Department of Design, and already for years the award has been handed out to prominent fashion students for developing their first collection.
Visions of the prominent young fashion designers are of interest to many fashion professionals, who arrived in Helsinki to follow Näytös19 and Aalto University's Fashion Seminar the day before. The events are part of Fashion in Helsinki, an international forum for professionals to get to know the latest talents and local brands. The aim of the event is to support exports and increase the visibility and attractiveness of Finnish design.
Journalistst Laird Borrelli-Persson, Vogue.com and Azza Yousif, Vogue Hommes, were looking forward to the fashion show. ‘I have high hopes’, said Borrelli-Persson, in regard to the fashion show later that night. ‘I hope to see an inspiring show. I hope the students are creative in a responsible way’, says Yousif, who is specialized in sustainable and responsible fashion.
Näytös is an annual fashion show where Aalto fashion students present their collections.

I interviewed two Aalto University instructors who have used glossaries created by students as coursework in a subject course and a field-specific language course. The assignments are based on active learning methods: the glossaries are not created by the instructor, but by the learners themselves. The interview focused, among other things, on the teaching philosophy behind developing the glossary tasks, how the learning of field-specific vocabulary can be linked to the overall learning objectives of the course, and what technical solutions enable students’ active learning in glossary assignments.
