FITech publishes two MOOCs under the theme of lifewide learning

FITech Network University, coordinated by Aalto University, tackles the challenges of lifewide learning with two new online courses. Courses help adult learners to start learning alongside work and support in updating the personnel's competence in organisations.

FITech has offered selected studies from all Finnish technical universities in free of charge for all permanent residents of Finland since 2019. During this time it has come clear that these studies that were originally meant for degree students don't necessarily fit the needs of those already in working life. The FITech course offering has been made more approachable by offering more online courses, cutting bigger courses into smaller units, and putting more and more effort into entry-level MOOCs. However, the courses don't seem to be fitting into the everyday working life.

"In our discussions with learners and employers, we discovered that the starting point is still too difficult. FITech study offering focuses on technology courses. Even though many of them are beginner-level, it is not that simple to dive right into the topic. While degree studies have orientation periods and training days have warm-ups, why should adult learners have to get along without any assistance?" says Akseli Huhtanen, who coordinated the MOOC project.

Please note that the content of the courses is in Finnish.

Further information:

Both courses are designed around specialist videos and compact content that can be studied in small pieces. We have gathered along some amazing experts such as post-doctoral researcher Frank Martela, university lecturer and researcher Hertta Vuorenmaa, professor of practice Lauri Järvilehto and Mimmit koodaa (Girls who code) programme coordinator Milja Köpsi.

You can study both courses online, on your own pace. After completing the course, you will get a course certificate, a digital badge and can register 1 ECTS per course by Aalto University. The courses are independent from each other.

The courses can be found from the as well as all other Aalto University courses offered free of charge through FITech.
