In February 2021 the Foundation for Aalto University Science and Technology handed out the Huawei Masters of Science scholarships to three Masters of Science (Technology) who graduated from the School of Electrical Engineering. There was no application process for the scholarships. Instead, all degrees completed at the School of Electrical Engineering that related to artificial intelligence, sound, security, antennas, or integrated circuits were recognised in the process. Deciding factors in selecting the winners included success in studies, and the grade given to the master's thesis. The awards worth €2,000 each, were given to Doru-Stefan Irimescu, Anssi Moisio and Samu-Ville Pälli.

Recipient Samu-Ville Pälli is currently a doctoral student at the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering in the Millimetre Wave and THz Techniques research group. His research focuses on imaging with the help of millimetre waves and holograms that utilise frequency diversity, and it directly continues his master's thesis. Samu-Ville says that his academic success has been beneficial already from the time that he was accepted into the university. While studying he was also able to work for the university as a research assistant.

â€˜I believe that when the motivation to study and interest in what is being learned are high, success in studies will come automatically. It is important to maintain a balance between studies and free time’, he adds.

Prizes to be handed out also in the coming years

The basis for the awards is a gift from Huawei to the Foundation for Aalto University Science and Technology, which will distribute the awards also in 2022 and 2023. One of the purposes of the donation was to encourage technology students in their studies.

‘We warmly congratulate the recipients of the scholarships for their excellent academic achievements. We were happy to have the opportunity to donate funds ÄûÃʵ¼º½ University scholarships for supporting promising and talented students. We greatly appreciate our cooperation with Aalto, and we want to encourage students in the field of technology to succeed in their studies and to further develop their skills and knowledge in the future as well’, says Mikko Terho, R&D Site Manager at Huawei Finland.
