PhD Maaria Nordman (b. 1981) has been appointed ʵ University’s Department of Built Environment as an Assistant Professor for the time 1.10.2019-30.9.2022. The field of her research is geoinformatics.

Geodesy and geodynamics are Nordman’s expertise. She has researched phenomena such as post glacial land uplift, Baltic Sea mass variation, effect of changing masses on geodetic measurements and accuracy of satellite positioning.

Before Aalto, Professor Nordman has worked as a special research scientist and earlier in other research positions at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) of the National Land Survey of Finland. She has wrote her geodesy dissertation “Improving GPS time series for geodynamics studies” in collaboration with FGI and graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy (Geophysics) in the University of Helsinki in 2010.

Measuring urban nature: new habitat types and criteria support the prevention of biodiversity loss

A recent report introduces an anthropogenic habitat classification and assessment criteria that make it possible to visualize, measure, and compare nature in the built environment. These tools enable the assessment of ecological condition and support the development of green infrastructure and the prevention of biodiversity loss in cities.
