Martti Hallikainen receives the NASA Group Achievement Award
The NASA Group Achievement Award was presented in June 2015 to the Global Precipitation Measurement Post-Launch Team, including Professor Emeritus Martti Hallikainen. The citation read “For exceeding all expectations for GPM operations, data processing, algorithm performance, science impact, and education and public outreach within one year after launch”. NASA certificate is awarded to any combination of individuals for an outstanding group accomplishment that has contributed substantially to NASA's mission.
Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is an international satellite mission to provide next-generation observations of rain and snow worldwide every three hours. NASA and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the GPM Core Observatory satellite on February 27th, 2014, carrying advanced microwave instruments that set a new standard for precipitation measurements from space. The Aalto University team, led by Martti Hallikainen, contributed to the development of correction algorithms for radar measurements of winter precipitation.
