Mathematics teaching reform receives special show of appreciation from students

The Guild of Physics has awarded a standard to the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis for its excellent reforms to basic teaching.

The standard was awarded as an acknowledgement of successful and effective cooperation. It was presented to the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis for an exceptionally successful Bachelor's degree programme reform. The guild wishes to promote the significance of teaching in the university community, and ensure in this way that teaching of a high standard receives the recognition it deserves.  Head of the Department Juha Kinnunen accepted the Guild of Physics standard, and it was presented by chairman of the guild's board Juho Timonen and Master of Studies Toni Mäkelä.

The distinction was presented at the Christmas party held by the guilds of the School of Science to which the staff and students of the School of Science had been invited. Numerous teachers from the Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis, as well as persons, who planned and designed the reform, were present at the event.

Students learning field-specific terminology through glossary tasks

I interviewed two Aalto University instructors who have used glossaries created by students as coursework in a subject course and a field-specific language course. The assignments are based on active learning methods: the glossaries are not created by the instructor, but by the learners themselves. The interview focused, among other things, on the teaching philosophy behind developing the glossary tasks, how the learning of field-specific vocabulary can be linked to the overall learning objectives of the course, and what technical solutions enable students’ active learning in glossary assignments.
