New heads of departments and deputy department heads appointed at the School of Engineering

Pedro Vilaça, Raine ²Ñä²Ô³Ù²â²õ²¹±ô´Ç and Leena Korkiala-Tanttu will begin their terms as heads of departments in January 2022.
Aalto University

New heads of departments and their deputies have been appointed from January 2022. The department heads are members of the school's management team.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Professor Pedro Vilaça, head of department
Professor Martti Larmi, deputy department head

Professor Pedro Vilaça is an experienced leader and has established the Advanced Manufacturing Materials (AM2) group by combining both production engineering and materials engineering research groups. He is also an internationally well-known and very innovative researcher with numerous patents and research-to-business (TUTLI) grants.

Department of Built Environment

Professor Raine ²Ñä²Ô³Ù²â²õ²¹±ô´Ç, head of department
Professor Harri Koivusalo, deputy department head.

Raine ²Ñä²Ô³Ù²â²õ²¹±ô´Ç’s research approach is multidisciplinary; he is professor of strategic urban planning and Adjunct Professor at the University of Oulu, specialized in planning theory and communicative planning. He worked several years as Director of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies YTK in the Helsinki University of Technology. ²Ñä²Ô³Ù²â²õ²¹±ô´Ç is also member of the Academy of Finland Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering.

Department of Civil Engineering

Professor Leena Korkiala-Tanttu, head of department
Professor Heidi Salonen, deputy department head.

Professor Leena Korkiala-Tanttu has extensive experience collaborating with Finnish Industry. Her research activities include pavement performance, ground improvement, BIM in infraconstruction, nuclear waste disposal and environmental impacts of infra construction. She has worked six years as deputy department head of the Department of Civil Engineering. She has also been the Alderman of the Guild of Civil Engineers IK.

A rap algorithm led him to research language models at Google DeepMind – now Eric Malmi returns ÄûÃʵ¼º½ as an adjunct professor

Eric Malmi received his PhD from Aalto University in 2018 with a dissertation that developed AI methods for linking historical records and family trees. At Google DeepMind he has developed Gemini language models and a chess AI. He returned to his alma mater because of ELLIS Institute Finland.

Haoye Tian has been appointed assistant professor at Aalto University Department of Computer Science as from 1 September 2025. He aims to create automated and reliable tools that improve the correctness, security and maintainability of real-world software systems.
