Peter Liljeroth appointed as Academy Professor

The Academy of Finland has granted funding for ten new Academy Professors in different fields of science. Aalto University has recently also received Academy funding for seven Academy Fellows and eight Postdoctoral Researchers.

Peter Liljeroth is professor at the Aalto University where he leads the research group. Liljeroth’s field is condensed-matter physics and he explores and fabricates new designer materials that do not exist in nature nor have yet been realised in the laboratory. These materials have intriguing, tunable electrical properties, and they can be manipulated and tuned atom by atom with scanning tunneling microscopy or molecular self-assembly.

'There are plenty of exciting and exotic predictions in theoretical physics of these never-before-seen materials with unique electrical properties. Very few of these have actually been realized in experiments – and this what we intend to achieve. We will try out methods and materials that no one has explored yet, let alone managed to fabricate,' Liljeroth explains

The terms for the newly-funded Academy Professors start in 2019 and will last until the end of the year 2023. By then, Liljeroth intends to build electronic devices that will make use of completely new designer quantum materials, such as two-dimensional topological superconductors and organic topological insulators. They could enable a range of new kinds of quantum technological applications.

Liljeroth has also received also the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for his study earlier in 2018.

The Academy of Finland also announced 17 May 2018 funding for new Academy Fellows and Postdoctoral Researchers in the fields of natural sciences and engineering.

Aalto University will have seven new Academy Fellows and eight Postdoctoral Researchers.
