The research team, led by Professor Marko Hinkkanen, has received a from the SEMIKRON Foundation. The value of the award is € 10,000.

The SEMIKRON Innovation Award is given for outstanding innovations in the field of power electronics in Europe, combined with notable societal benefits in form of supporting environmental protection and sustainability by improving energy efficiency and conservation of resources.

The team has developed a control method for a magnetically levitated linear motor system. The motor system needs no mechanical contacts, since its all six degrees-of-freedom are stabilized by controlling its magnetic fields. The invention could be applied to, for example, ropeless multi-car elevator systems of the future.

The award-winning innovation team includes Professor Marko Hinkkanenfrom Aalto University’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Visiting Researcher Seppo Saarakkala, and PhD students Maksim Sokolov and Reza Hosseinzadeh.
