Finnish Petroleum and Biofuels Association, which was established in 1970, has actively contributed to the development of environmental work and energy efficiency as well as technical legislation and standardization. The association closed down in the beginning of this year and decided to donate EUR 240 000 of their remaining funds to the renewable energy research at Aalto University.

‘Even though the association has shut down its operations, investment in the field’s sustainable development continues. We wish to strengthen this development by supporting the important research conducted at Aalto University on renewable forms of energy’, says Pekka Huttula, Liquidator and the former Deputy Managing Director of the Finnish Petroleum and Biofuels Association.

For instance, Aalto University is developing the world’s most effective black solar cells which are especially well-suited for the Nordic region and tackling challenges associated with the storage of renewable energy. At Aalto University, research is also conducted on the impacts and opportunities brought by the global energy revolution for Finnish economy and citizens.

'We are extremely grateful for this donation. The research on sustainable development and environmental challenges has a central role in the Aalto University strategy. The sustainable use of materials and natural resources is a key factor in our research and teaching’, states Ossi Naukkarinen, Vice President for Research at Aalto University.
