Seven proposals funded to support Aalto’s International Partnerships
such as joint research programmes, expert networks etc., in the areas of waste management, language technology, Internet of Things, Arctic technology, design and fashion, wireless communication and smart mobility.
The pilot seed funding for International Partnerships was opened during autumn 2017. Aalto’s academic community responded to the pilot call with enthusiasm, with nearly 40 applications. This year funding was available for 100 000 euros and for seven initiatives. “I’m very pleased with the a high interest, and will work toward facilitating such efforts also in the future” says Vice President Tuija Pulkkinen.
Cooperation with academic partners is an integral part of Aalto’s internationalization. This funding mechanism was a pilot to see if and what kind of interest there is for such cooperation initiatives. Towards that end the call was for initiatives focusing on educational as well as for research collaboration. Proposals with Aalto’s key partners -- Tongji University in Shanghai, China; Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Yonsei University in South Korea; the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in nearly 20 locations all over India; Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD); Stanford, and Berkeley universities in California as well as the New School in NYC, USA -- were particularly encouraged and the majority of the applications were for such partnership initiatives. This first year, the successful candidates were drawn from that group.
