Valtteri Niska and Jessika Sjöholm, accounting students at Aalto University School of Business, conducted a comprehensive analysis of the consulting market in Finland to estimate the current market size and assess the competitive landscape of KPMG's Advisory services. Employing various analytical tools and techniques, the team collected, analyzed, and interpreted relevant data from multiple sources such as interviews, industry reports, financial competitor data, and financial statements.

The findings were presented in a detailed report, which included an overview of the consulting market size and growth in Finland, KPMG Advisory’s market share across different segments, and the driving forces behind the market's growth and development. The report also provided an in-depth analysis of the market's key competitors and a detailed examination of the technology consulting sector.

‘Not only did we dive deep into the consulting industry in general, but we also gained valuable insights into the use of technology in Finnish companies. As future professionals, this knowledge will certainly complement our business studies,’ says Jessika Sjöholm, a project team member.

Effective collaboration led to a successful outcome

KPMG Finland can use the project’s insights to enhance its market position, improve its competitive advantage, and develop effective strategies that meet the needs of its clients.

‘The outcome of the project surpassed our expectations, and on a scale of 1–5, I would rate it as a 5. Students managed to handle the complex assignment very well and focus on the aspects that are useful for KPMG,’ Kim Lehto, Director at KPMG Advisory, says.

The project started in the beginning of December 2023 and was finished by the end of February 2024. During this intensive period, the collaboration between team members, KPMG, and the project supervisor worked extremely well. Supervisor, Professor of Practice Jari Melgin concluded after the final presentation that it is not an easy task to present to a highly professional audience. ‘Jessika and Valtteri were well prepared, and their logical argumentation supported a consistent narrative. As their instructor, I could just sit back and enjoy.’

Aalto University’s fruitful collaboration with industry was once again excellently demonstrated in this project, offering students an exceptional opportunity to solve real business problems which also helps the company navigate their business.

‘The project provided a great opportunity to develop professionally and learn from experienced professionals from KPMG and Aalto. It was difficult and required a lot of work, but also taught me more than any other course during my studies, also about important soft skills like interviewing and presenting,’ student Valtteri Niska reflects.
