Students explored digital business through multidisciplinary projects

Summer of 2017: 55 students and 14 business projects
ITP alumna Riikka Ylitalo from Tax Administration (Verohallinto) and ITP Project Coordinator Riikka Iivanainen met at an ITP Alumni Reunion Party in July 2017.

Information Technology Program (ITP) offered a 14-week intensive summer program. The 55 students who participated in the program completed a minor subject module of 24 credits. The students carried out altogether 14 business projects for client companies. The project ranged from blockchain management to envisioning the digital future of the construction industry, designing omnichannel experiences to analytics strategies.

'We are happy to see that ITP is so well received in many different industries. ITP is not only a learning experience for the students, but also for the companies. It is a great opportunity for companies to get emerged in new ways of thinking and doing. We encourage students to adapt to new paradigms and lead by action', says ITP Program Manager Laura Sivula.

Work experience for students and new out-of-the-box ideas and concepts for companies

ITP courses are taught by visiting faculty and industry experts. Passionate participation and collaboration encourages students to set ambitious goals. Professor Nenad Jukic from Loyola University Chicago taught the course Data-Driven Decision Making for the second time this summer. 'Teaching on ITP has been my favourite professional experience ever. I cannot wait to get back next summer', says Professor Jukic.

ITP welcomes students from all Aalto University School of Business partner universities. Margaret Kapitany from Simon Fraser University in Canada came to spend the summer in Helsinki. 'ITP has been even more valuable than I expected coming in as a foreign exchange student. I've been blessed with a very friendly group of local students that have helped me learn more about living in Helsinki. Most of all, I'm excited to utilize my business project as a practical example of consulting in future job seeking', says Margaret who will continue her studies in Canada.

Many students from Finnish universities come to study on ITP through the JOO study agreement. Teresa Silvennoinen is a Masters’ student in Marketing at the Turku School of Economics. 'I feel that my summer has been like a short exchange semester. A new city, new people and definitely new ideas. Thanks to ITP I see design and business thinking in a different light than before, and I have finally found topics that I am passionate about. Summer well spent', says Teresa.

The students and companies equally found that the project was a rewarding learning experience in multiple ways, as it offers both work experience for students and new out-of-the-box ideas and concepts for companies.
