A total of 33 consortia jointly formed by research organisations and companies received 42 million euros as 2nd stage funding.

The aim of the competition was to improve the interaction between research organizations and companies as well as to promote the utilization of research results. In the first stage of the competition, the researchers created significant solutions to the problems identified by the companies. During the currently on-going second stage projects, the companies will further develop these solutions together with the researchers.
 

Challenge Finland competition, the 1st stage

The first stage of the competition was only open for research organizations. They submitted 348 project applications from which Tekes granted 70. Aalto was involved in 21 1st stage projects (see the list of Aalto’s projects at the bottom).

The projects duration was approx. 6 months (6/2016–11/2016) and Tekes funding was approximately 5 M€ euros in total.
 

Challenge Finland competition, the 2nd stage

The competition winners were 33 consortia involving a total of 98 companies and 21 research organisations. In addition, several other companies also participate in the work either with financial or in-kind contributions, but without Tekes funding. Aalto is involved in 10 projects (see the list of Aalto’s projects at the bottom)

The first projects started at the beginning of 2017 and the research organizations’ projects can continue until the end of 2018. A total of 42 M€ was granted to the second-stage projects, of which Tekes’ own share was 12 M€ and the remaining 30 M€ were Key Project funding administered by Tekes.

• uO5G − Micro-operator Concept for Boosting Local Service Delivery in 5G (Eltel Networks Oy, Nokia Solutions and Networks Oy, University of Oulu, Aalto-ELEC/Heikki Hämmäinen, FICORA, Ministry of Transport and Communications ; in addition, the consortium includes 4 other companies)
• Better Working Machines with Hydraulic Hybrid Technology (TUT, Aalto-ENG/Matti Pietola, Ponsse Oyj, Fiellberg Oy; in addition, the consortium includes 3 other companies)
• Fedoc – Opioidipitoisuuden mittaaminen verinäytteestä nopeasti ja kustannustehokkaasti (Oy Medix Biochemica Ab, Aalto-CHEM/Jari Koskinen; in addition, the consortium includes 3 other companies)
• Reino − rakennusten käyttäjät huomioiva esineiden internet osana kestäviä energiajärjestelmiä (Aalto-ENG/Sanna Syri, Fourdeg Oy, Granlund Oy; in addition, the consortium includes 5 other companies)
• Mikropumput yksisolutekniikoihin ja lääketieteen avuksi (University of Helsinki, LUT, Wallac Oy, Aalto-ELEC/Sami Franssila, Biocomputing Platforms Ltd Oy; in addition, the consortium includes 3 other companies)
• Tehokas ja turvallinen mineraalien tunnistaminen − reaaliaikaiset älykkäät menetelmät (National Land Survey of Finland , VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, Aalto-ENG/Jussi Leveinen, Cybercube Oy; in addition, the consortium includes 2 other companies)
• Varpu − Virtual and Augmented Reality Content Production and Use (Kii Oy, Stereoscape Oy, Nokia Technologies Oy, Granlund Oy, 3D Talo Finland Oy, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, Rejlers Finland Oy, Ruukki Construction Oy, UTA, Aalto-ENG/Hannu Hyyppä, National Land Survey of Finland, University of Lapland, Finwe Oy, FinCloud Oy, Sky High VR Oy, Fortum Power and Heat Oy; in addition, the consortium includes 4 other companies)
