The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce a new course: Law in Digital Society

The legal challenges of digitalization and who gets to exploit data: a new course Law in Digital Society will be a launched.

The Department of Computer Science is pleased to announce that a new course: CSE-E4680 Law in Digital Society will be a launched in the next academic year 2015-2016. This course will build on the core strengths of its predecessors on ICT Law and expand to cover new areas due to the emergence of the Internet of Things, Industrial Internet and the Internet of Everything.

Topics to be discussed in the course include: IT Contracts, Open Source, Data Protection, Intellectual Property Rights (inclusive of Database Rights), Consumer Protection, EU Law, Competition Law, Cyber Law and Cyber Security, Big Data, Privacy and Mass Surveillance, etc. The aim of the course is to provide a wide overview of how the Information Society in general and pervasive and ubiquitous computing in particular are regulated.

Students learning field-specific terminology through glossary tasks

I interviewed two Aalto University instructors who have used glossaries created by students as coursework in a subject course and a field-specific language course. The assignments are based on active learning methods: the glossaries are not created by the instructor, but by the learners themselves. The interview focused, among other things, on the teaching philosophy behind developing the glossary tasks, how the learning of field-specific vocabulary can be linked to the overall learning objectives of the course, and what technical solutions enable students’ active learning in glossary assignments.
