The Summer Job Day event brought together Aalto University students and potential employers

The 2024 Summer Job Day brought 35 employers to Otaniemi campus to showcase their job opportunities for Aalto students.

According to Statistics Finland, the number of job advertisements has decreased significantly in 2023 in Finland and this also has an impact on students' job search. With fewer jobs available than before, the importance of recruitment events is even more important. Events such as the Summer Job Day, which allow students to meet and network with employers, learn about different companies and the opportunities they offer, provide opportunities for students to build connections with the companies and gain all-important experience during studies

The employers present at the fair also stressed the importance of connecting with the students and how important Aalto University students and alumni are as a target group. Many companies have their headquarters in the Helsinki region and Aalto University students make up a large part of the workforce recruited each year.

‘We hire a large number of Aalto University students and alumni every year, for example, last year we hired almost two hundred Aalto University students for summer jobs alone,’ says Maria Pasanen,Employer Branding Country Manager, from ABB, Aalto University's strategic partner company.

Despite the challenging economic situation, companies consider the recruitment fairs, introducing themselves to students and offering them summer jobs as a vital part of their recruitment activities. Jani Mikanmaa, HR Manager at OP Uusimaa, says that the OP, who is a Premium Partner of the School of Business, will offer the same number of summer jobs and traineeships this year as in the previous years. OP has around 500 summer jobs available throughout Finland, 200 of which are located in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

For us, the highlight of the event is when we can tell the students how diverse actually the business functions at K Group are

K Group HR Specialist Milla Korhonen and Senior HR Specialist Essi Vuorenmaa say that introducing the company's activities to students is a highlight of the fair, as many companies offer much more diverse opportunities than students might have anticipated. Telling students about summer jobs and directing them to the company's career pages is also important, and K Group, which is also a Premium Partner of the School of Business, is offering up to 6,000 summer jobs this year.

Summer jobs or internships often give students their first taste of career prospects in their field, and companies try to offer students further career opportunities alongside their studies where possible. HR Specialist Lotta Lukka from Destia says that many of the summer workers have been able to write also a Master’s or Bachelor’s thesis for the company when the time comes. Destia is a partner company of Career Design Lab.

Summer Job Day is part of Aalto University's career services offering, which aims to develop the students' career design and job search skills. The next Aalto University career fair, Aalto Talent Expo, will take place in November 2024 and registration for exhibitors will open in May.
