Timo Viherkenttä's three-year professorship focuses on business law, and its aim is to strengthen competence in tax law at Aalto University and to bring a practical perspective to the subject. Viherkenttä has extensive experience both in different areas of tax law and in economy in general. In his research, Viherkenttä will focus particularly on topics related to corporate taxation, taxation of investment activities and the financing of pensions.

‘It is wonderful to now return to research and teaching in the role of Professor of Practice. The task provides an optimal opportunity to combine my previous academic background with my experience acquired through various legal and financial positions. Tax policy is currently developing at a very fast pace, especially at the international level, and it is particularly appealing to be able to analyse reform initiatives and to participate in the discussion on them,’ Timo Viherkenttä says.

Timo Viherkenttä has the degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Helsinki, and his studies in the field of tax law have been published in both Finnish and international journals. He has also been a Docent of Tax Law at the University of Helsinki since 1992.

Viherkenttä has extensive work experience in the field of tax law. He has been CEO of the State Pension Fund of Finland since 2015 and will continue in this position until the end of February. He has previously served as Justice of the Supreme Administrative Court, Director General of the Budget Department at the Ministry of Finance, and as a fixed-term professor at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Law. Viherkenttä has also held numerous board positions both in companies and in scientific and cultural foundations, where he has served as the chairman of both the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Board of the National Gallery. In addition, he has been a member of the Aalto University Investment Committee since 2018.

‘Timo’s appointment strengthens Aalto University's position as Finland's leading centre of expertise in tax law. We also have a strong interface with disciplines closely related to tax law, such as accounting and economics. Timo brings strong practical expertise and an extensive contact network to our university, which also strengthens the possibilities for carrying out interdisciplinary research involving other subjects at our university,’ says Professor of Business Law Kari Hoppu
