Vice Deans and Heads of Departments appointed at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture

The Vice Deans and Heads of Departments have been appointed at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture for the term 1.9.2019 - 31.8.2024.

The Vice Deans and Heads of Departments have been appointed at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture for the term 1.9.2019 - 31.8.2024. The positions received a considerable interest from the Aalto Community.

Lecturer Rasmus Vuori was nominated Vice Dean responsible for education, lecturer Saija Hollmén Vice Dean responsible for artistic and creative practices, and professor Turkka Keinonen Vice Dean responsible for research.

As for the Heads of Departments, Pirjo Sanaksenaho was nominated Head of the Department of Architecture, Anna Heiskanen Head of the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, Philip Dean Head of the Department of Media (for the term 1.9.2019-31.5.2021), Tuuli Mattelmäki Head of the Department of Design and Kevin Tavin Head of the Department of Art.

The Vice Deans will assist the Dean in managing the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The particular priority in the work of the Vice Dean will be developing the school’s activities and strategy from an overall perspective. There are three Vice Deans working in ARTS: one responsible for research, one responsible for education and one for responsible for artistic and creative practices. 

The School’s academic activity is divided into five departments - Department of Architecture, Department of Art, Department of Film, Television and Scenography, Department of Design and Department of Media. The Head of Department leads the activities of the department and is responsible for it’s academic and financial results. The Head of Department puts forward proposals to the school academic committee on the study plans and degree requirements as well as student admission criteria.

Eric Malmi received his PhD from Aalto University in 2018 with a dissertation that developed AI methods for linking historical records and family trees. At Google DeepMind he has developed Gemini language models and a chess AI. He returned to his alma mater because of ELLIS Institute Finland.
