Aker Arctic and Aalto University signed an agreement on the joint use of ice tanks for modelling and research at the Arctic Passion Seminar held on 2 March.

Aker Arctic’s tank in Helsinki is 75 metres long and 8 metres wide, which in conjunction with Aalto University’s Aalto Ice Tank offers an ideal environment for manoeuvring tests and other operative model-scale tests of ice-breaking ships.

‘Aalto University’s ice tank is an excellent complement to our own research infrastructure, as Aalto Ice Tank is well-suited for ice management and offshore testing’, said Managing Director Reko-Antti Suojanen of Aker Arctic.

‘This agreement further strengthens the long-term partnership between Aker Arctic and Aalto University and our combined research infrastructure opens new avenues for ice technology research’, commented Dean Gary Marquis.

Aalto Ice Tank is a multipurpose basin 40 metres in length and width. The basin has been used for testing the resistance, propulsion and manoeuvring of ships, studying the interactions between marine structures and ice and modelling naturally occurring ice formations, such as ice ridges. Based in Otaniemi in the early 1980s, the basin received a major overhaul in 2015–2016.
