Having completed studies in the master’s programme in Electronics and Nanotechnology, the student will have the ability to develop further competencies through scientific doctoral studies and lifelong learning. The student will have acquired scientific thinking practices and will be able to adapt these in their career in the industry or the academia.

The student will understand the theories and concepts related to their own field. Additionally, they will be able to apply those in the research and development tasks in the field of their major.

The student will be able to choose and use appropriate methods and tools for design and performance evaluation. They will be able to critically observe the results, processes, and methods in the engineering work. The student will know the main sources of information within their major and can acquire new knowledge to support their tasks.

Furthermore, the student will develop their oral and written communication skills. The student will be able to work collaboratively in groups. In addition, the student will be able to contribute within an interdisciplinary group also in an international environment. Field-specific learning outcomes are available under the majors.

Master's Programme in Electronics and Nanotechnology offers five majors. Students choose one major at the beginning of the studies: 

• Microelectronic Circuit Design
• Antennas and Microwave Engineering
• Photonics and Nanotechnology
• Space Science and Technology
• Wireless and RF Engineering

Microelectronic Circuit Design 

Integrated circuits are the enablers of the complex functionality embedded in all present-day electronic devices. Combining logic, processors, memory, analog and digital signal processing and radio frequency communications, electronics have provided miniaturised implementations of functions that decades ago could not be even dreamed of. To be able to design integrated circuits for embedded devices, the designers needs to handle not only the theory of electronics, but also the design flow principles, tools, and understand the various abstraction layers of the design presentations. On the other hand, implementing digital circuits requires knowledge on hardware efficient implementation methods of signal processing algorithms and good coding practices for hardware description languages.

Antennas and Microwave Engineering 

In Microwave Engineering, students learn to develop microwave components for modern wireless devices as well as to understand new developments in wireless connections. The major covers interesting current trends, such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces that can be used to control microwaves. In particular, students learn to design antennas for wireless devices and networks and predict how the waves propagate in different environments. Microwave engineers are challenged to design new solutions while prioritising energy efficiency, durability, recyclability, more sustainable life cycles, waste reduction, and minimisation of environmental effects.

Photonics and Nanotechnology

In Photonics and Nanotechnology, students learn the principles of physics governing the properties and interaction of light and matter. The main focus is on applying these theories to the development and manufacture of state-of-the-art, green, and efficient devices while utilising, for instance, nanocarbon compounds and 2D materials. Semiconductor manufacturing technology and novel nanofabrication methods our students learn about can be exploited in many areas, including sensors, optoelectronic devices (solar cells, LEDs, lasers), photonic devices, and even nanoelectronic devices based on quantum physics. During their studies, students have the opportunity to operate in the largest cleanroom research facility in the Nordic countries, Micronova.

Space Science and Technology

The Space Science and Technology major has four focus areas: space technology, Earth observation, space physics and radio astronomy. These include, for example, building of satellite systems and space instruments, developing microwave radar and radiometer methods for Earth observation, working with space weather satellite observations and numerical simulations of the Earth and other solar system objects, and radio astronomical techniques, and the study of active galactic nuclei and galactic objects. The student can choose the study field(s) according to their academic or career interests.

Wireless and RF Engineering

In the field of wireless and RF engineering, students delve into the intricacies of transmitting and receiving radio waves through the use of antennas. They gain a profound understanding of how these transmitted waves propagate and interact within diverse environments. Additionally, students acquire the skills necessary to manipulate these radio waves to convey information effectively, as well as leverage them for environmental sensing applications, such as radar systems.

Learning outcomes of the major

After completing the major, student has acquired the following skills: 

• Knows the fundamental theory of transistors as building blocks of analog and digital 
  microelectronics.
• Knows the design principles of analog microelectronics amplifiers and design 
  methodologies of analog microelectronics systems.
• Knows the fundamental concepts related to design of digital microelectronic building 
  blocks and digital system optimization.
• Is capable of designing digital microelectronic systems with hardware description 
  languages.
• Is familiar with design verification methods used in analog and digital 
  microelectronics design.
• Knows the fundamental theory and most essential design methodologies required in 
  design of radio frequency and millimeter wavelength microelectronics.

Completing the major provides excellent base for PhD studies in the field of microelectronics design.

• can design, analyze, prototype, and characterize passive and active microwave 
  components, circuits and systems, and antennas.
• can explain the fundamental mechanisms and phenomena related to radio wave 
  propagation and apply radio wave propagation models to estimate radio wave propagation in various scenarios.
• has a readiness to perform microwave engineering and antenna-related computer 
  simulations and measurements. They can analyze the results and identify possible error sources.

• is able to explain and discuss space as an environment for instruments and science, including space debris, and its role in the Earth system monitoring for sustainable future.
• can apply the basic physical principles governing the processes in microwave Earth observation, space physics, radio astronomy, and in space systems.
• is able to characterize the functioning and construction principles of satellites and their individual subsystems, and apply the basic principles of the industrial space technology development process.
• can participate in designing and building of a reliable and energy-efficient space system, and contribute to a space project of the European Space Agency.
• is able to select suitable methods for measuring and recording data from space and carry out research and instrumentation projects, and produce scientific results in the related focus areas.

• demonstrate proficiency in undertaking research, development and innovation tasks in antenna, 
  wave propagation, communications, and signal processing.
• can apply advanced engineering mathematics and fundamental concepts in RF and 
  communications engineering, and signal processing.
• can explain the fundamental mechanisms and phenomena related to radio wave propagation 
  and apply radio wave propagation models to estimate radio wave propagation in various 
  scenarios.
• can analyze the basic properties of antennas and can apply antenna-related concepts to realize a wireless system.

Students are required to complete a Master's Thesis, which is an individual research assignment with a workload corresponding to 30 credits. The thesis is written on a topic related to the student's advanced studies and is agreed upon between the student and a supervisor who specializes in the topic area of the thesis. Master’s Thesis work includes a seminar presentation or equivalent presentation. The Master’s Thesis is a public document and cannot be concealed.

Students choose 25 credits of elective studies. As elective studies, students can complete a minor and/or take individual courses. Students can freely choose a minor or individual courses of their interest to complement the content of their major or to expand knowledge beyond one’s main field of study. Interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial courses are encouraged. 

Minor is selected from the list of available minors in the academic catalogue.

• Studies from other Finnish Universities
• Studies completed during exchange studies abroad
• Practical training credits (max 5 ECTS)

Studies in the master’s programme should provide students with new knowledge. Studies that overlap or have similar content with studies that are included in student’s bachelor’s degree primarily cannot be included in master’s degree. 

In general, elective studies must be university or university of applied sciences level studies. Universities also offer courses that are targeted for a larger audience. The suitability of these studies is evaluated taking into consideration the learning outcomes of the programme and the aims of the master of science (technology) degree. 

Compulsory language studies

Compulsory language studies are included as part of the Finnish Bachelor’s degree for students who have studied in Finland and whose language of education is Finnish or Swedish. If the language studies have not been completed in the student’s Bachelor’s degree, the student must take 2 ECTS in the second national language and 3 ECTS in one foreign language, including both oral and written proficiency.

Students who have received their education in a language other than Finnish or Swedish, or received their education abroad, are required to complete only 3 ECTS in one foreign language, including both oral and written proficiency. Relevant courses (marked with ‘o’ and ‘w’) are offered by the Aalto University Language Center. Alternatively, these students can choose 3 ECTS of Finnish courses, hence not covering the requirement of oral/written proficiency but meeting the language requirement of the degree.

Language studies are included in students’ elective studies and are agreed in the personal study plan (HOPS).
