Master's Programme in Engineering Physics

Planning your studies

Planning of studies is an integral and necessary part of university studies. and the Degree Regulations of Aalto University School of Science determine the boundary conditions for the content and extent of the degree. Within the limits of these boundaries you have the possibility to make choices that support your own interests, goals, and life situation in different phases of your studies, e.g.:

  • which major to choose
  • which minor(s) to study
  • should I go on exchange
  • should I do an internship
  • which thesis topic to choose.

Instructions for planning your studies

The most important planning tool is your personal study plan (HOPS). In your HOPS, you draw up a plan for the content of your degree and the schedule for completing your studies. The planning is based on the curriculum of the programme.

It is important to understand the studies as a whole, because if you intend to apply for for example a student exchange, you must have room for exchange studies in your degree. In many cases, exchange studies take place as elective studies or as an international studies minor, so it is not advisable to fill these components of your study plan fully with other courses if you intend to go on exchange.

Studies completed elsewhere and credit transfer

At Aalto University, you can complete studies outside your own school and field. Outside your own university, you can take individual courses or an entire minor. Check with your major beforehand, whether you can include the courses you are planning to include in your degree.

Elective studies

Below you will find tips for the elective studies mentioned in the curriculum. These guidelines supplement the information provided in the curriculum. The scope of the elective studies depends on the scope of the major and minor studies. The scope of the degree is 120 ECTS. No additional courses can be placed in the degree.

General information about course registration and exams

Aalto's curriculum period is two years. The courses are valid for two years at a time, according to the information available in Sisu. The course and exam schedules for the upcoming academic year are published annually in June.

Quantum technology studies in University of Helsinki

The Aalto University and the University of Helsinki have signed a cross-institutional studies agreement (“QuantEd agreement”) that allows students of selected degree programmes to sign-up for quantum-related courses organized by the other institution. The aim of the agreement is to broaden the selection of quantum-related studies available to students and enhance student mobility between the two institutions.

The agreement concerns Aalto University students of the following Master’s programmes

  • Master’s Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering,
  • Master’s Programme in Electronics and Nanotechnology,
  • Master’s Programme in Engineering Physics,
  • Master’s Programme in Mathematics and Operations Research,

and doctoral students in the fields of

  • Engineering Physics,
  • Photonics and Nanotechnology,
  • Radio Science and Engineering.

These students may apply for the following courses in University of Helsinki. The courses are intended to complement the courses offered by the home university.

The relevant courses of University of Helsinki are listed below. Before applying for a study right, please check from your own programme whether the course credits fit in your degree. Do this before registering for the planned network studies.

DigiQ: Europe-wide quantum technology student networks

Pursuing studies related to quantum technology? Interested in international studies and/or networking? DigiQ project offers these and more! DigiQ is a Europe-wide project for students interested in quantum technologies.

Learn more here:

Please note: If you are interested in taking DigiQ courses and adding those to your degree, please check beforehand from your own programme whether the course credits fit in your degree and check the possibility for credit transfer.

Career planning

Graduates of the Engineering Physics programme have traditionally found an exceptionally wide variety of careers both in the private sector, industry, and in the public sector ranging from research to consulting and management positions. A strong education in physics, closely knit to the research at Aalto University and Department of Applied Physics, is also an excellent starting point for a career in academia.
