Elective studies

For your free elective studies module you can study courses offered by Aalto University or by other universities as it is possible by Aalto internal and inter institutional agreements and procedures and course specific prerequisites.

The structure of your Master’s Programme is designed so that you are able to study your major studies i.e. common and advanced courses during the first year. This leaves the second year for elective courses and Master’s thesis.
Alternatively, you can deepen your expertise by taking more of our advanced courses as elective studies or broaden your expertise by choosing courses from Aalto’s other programmes or from different universities.
The choice for elective studies is yours: the most important thing is that your elective studies complement your major studies and provide you with expertise that you personally feel important and inspiring for your career.

You can complete a minor subject and include it in elective studies. Please note that if you want to have a minor it needs to be advanced level minor. Please see the list of all minors offered by Aalto University under Minors

You can also include max 5 ECTS of practical training (ENG-E1010 Practical training) in your elective studies. You can find information on practical training on  (MyCourses).

Elective studies must be university level studies that fulfill the degree requirements and, in general, studies that are offered as degree studies at the university in question. Universities also offer courses that are targeted for a larger audience. The suitability of these studies is evaluated taking into consideration the learning outcomes of the degree that the courses are planned to be included in.

Compulsory language studies are included in students’ elective studies and are agreed in the personal study plan.

Please note that the total number of credits for a master's degree (major studies, elective studies and master's thesis) may not exceed 125 ECTS.

Practical training

The aim of the practical training at the School of Engineering is to deepen the professional skills by doing major studies related area specific practical engineering and/or research tasks under senior supervision. The tasks should be typical for the later M.Sc. work profiles. Credits for the practical training will be included in the elective studies.
The extent of the School of Engineering’s practical training is 1 to 5 credit points. The extent of the study attainment varies according to the length of practical training. One credit point equals to two weeks of full time work (37,5 – 40 h / week).

More detailed instructions about completing Aalto ENG-E1010 Practical Training course can be found on MyCourses.
Registration to the course can be found on Sisu.

Applying for graduation

Students can apply for graduation in Sisu when all courses required for the master's degree have been registered in Sisu, and the master’s thesis submitted to evaluation (or completed).

Graduation is sought through the study plan in Sisu and therefore it is crucial that the study plan is up to date, reviewed and approved by programme administrative staff.
The courses shown in the study plan will also be printed on the degree certificate.

Note that you can apply for the approval and evaluation of the thesis in MyStudies and apply for graduation in Sisu at the same time.

Note: The electronic degree certificate will replace the traditional paper degree certificate for those graduating on or after 1 August 2025

The electronic degree certificate is an official original document bearing the digital signature of the school dean.

The electronic degree certificate is more reliable than a paper certificate, since it is considerably more difficult to forge. It is also easily authenticated in e.g. the certification service of the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. In addition, it can simplify a student’s job search, as it can be easily included as a digital attachment in an online application form.

Most Finnish universities have already switched to using electronic degree certificates. Aalto is currently preparing its migration to the new system. We will inform you as the project proceeds.
