Rankings and reputation
The departments in our school are very well respected in their fields, and many rank among the top programmes in international surveys, year for year. Art and design field at Aalto University is ranked 8th best in the world at the international 5.
Aalto Department of Architecture is ranked highest in Finland and among the top fifty (#49) architecture schools in the world (QS 2025). Projects by the department are nominated for national and international awards, such as the Finlandia Prize (2018) and the ArchDaily Building of the Year award (2018).
In 2019, the Business of Fashion ranked the Aalto BA programme in Fashion amongst the best in the world. Our fashion students have excelled in the annual Designers’ Nest/Alpha competition for 12 consecutive years, as well as reached the final of Hyères Fashion Festival 13 years in a row. Also our photography students have been finalists to the esteemed Hyères Festival of Fashion and Photography.
The Department of Film (ELO Film School) trains experts for virtually the entire Finnish film industry. Every year, our students and staff produce numerous fictional and documentary short films, animations, and experimental works. Many of these premiere at domestic film festivals, where they also garner recognition. Films by our graduates and current students are regularly screened at international festivals and competitions.
