The goal of the study and career counselling psychologists of Aalto is to promote the wellbeing and studying of all of our students from bachelor’s students to doctoral students. For students, the most visible form of our work is the individual counselling offered by our study and career counselling psychologists. We offer individual counselling both through booked appointments and as a drop-in service in the Starting Point of Wellbeing.
We also support students directly by offering courses, group counselling, lectures and workshops as well as by producing materials that support the students’ studies, employment and wellbeing, such as online materials, online courses, videos and podcasts. A part of our lectures and workshops is integrated into the teaching offered for credit by the degree programmes.
We offer support to the student community in community crises, e.g. when a student passes away. We work for the wellbeing of students also by serving in expert roles in the university working groups and training and consulting Aalto staff on topics like student guidance and interaction with students. We support the development of degree programmes by participating in the quality and wellbeing work carried out on the basis of the AllWell? student wellbeing survey. In addition, we are involved in various networks working with student wellbeing in higher education.
The work of the study and career counselling psychologists is part of the student wellbeing and counselling work at Aalto. We complement the whole formed by degree education, academic advising and career services, especially where special knowledge of student counselling is needed. Our work focuses on the psychological barriers to wellbeing in learning and employment, such as emotional blocks related to studying and employment, motivational issues, challenges in self-regulation or difficulties in identifying one's own strengths.
The work of study and career psychologists does not include the provision of healthcare services, such as assessing a person’s health status or providing treatment or preventive healthcare. However, we understand that conditions such as depression or ADHD may affect the ability to study or find a job, and we help students cope with studies or find work when their ability to function is hampered by mental health issues or learning difficulties. The Aalto study and career counselling psychologists are licenced by Finnish Supervisory Agency, and work according to the ethical principles of the Finnish Psychological Association.
Overall, our goal is to bring psychological expertise ÄûÃʵ¼º½ so that more students at all degree levels can feel well during their studies, graduate and find a meaningful job.
