Language Centre Career System

The career system at the Aalto University Language Centre is a standardized career system that provides a transparent and consistent process according to common rules throughout the Language Centre. The career system at the Language Centre adheres to the university's general guidelines and principles, such as Aalto Code of Conduct, HR guidelines, and the university's general commitments to responsible research assessment.

Positions in Language Centre career system

The career system at the Language Centre comprises four levels: 1) university teacher, 2) lecturer and university lecturer, 3) senior university lecturer, and 4) principal university lecturer. The levels of the career system and related processes are shown in the picture below.

The structure of the Language Centre career system is similar to the lecturer career system applied in schools. However, the key bodies and decision-makers at the Language Centre differ from those in schools, so please make sure to familiarize yourself with the correct guidelines.

Recruitment to the Language Centre career system

Teaching staff at the Language Centre are primarily recruited through an open, competitive recruitment process. The vice president for education decides on the initiation of recruitment based on a proposal from the head of the Language Centre.

Recruitment is possible at the levels of university teacher, lecturer/university lecturer, and senior university lecturer. Direct recruitment to the position of principal university lecturer is not possible.

Advancement within the Language Centre career system 

Advancement within the Language Centre career system is not automatic but is based on a thorough evaluation of the individual’s teaching competence and other merits. Achievements and qualifications are discussed annually in My Dialogues discussions. The evaluation is based on the criteria presented in appendix 1 of the Code of Practice at the bottom of the page.

The Aalto Language Centre provides language and communication teaching for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students and Aalto staff. In addition, we cooperate with various Aalto schools, other Finnish higher education institutions, and a number of other partners.

Lecturer career system

Aalto lecturer career system is intended primarily for individuals conducting teaching. The lecturer career system supports individual development and career advancement through clear principles and systematic evaluation criteria and allows Aalto teachers and lecturers to advance in their careers with teaching-focused merits. Teachers and lecturers have the opportunity to advance within the career system, from the university teacher level to the university lecturer level, and further to the position of a senior university lecturer and principal university lecturer.
