Memory-friendly Living in Kirkkonummi 2022

Globally, aging populations and memory decline challenge cities to provide suitable housing and meaningful living arrangements. Traditional responses often involve specialized care facilities, which can isolate residents from their communities. Instead, we need diverse, flexible, communal, and multi-generational living options for individuals with memory decline.

This studio focused on designing a memory-friendly housing neighborhood in Kirkkonummi, near the future community health center. The goal was to enable individuals with memory decline to age in place, promote social integration, and reduce the need for institutional care. A memory-friendly neighborhood fostered social identity, accessibility, rich green spaces, and outdoor activities, supporting active living.

By emphasizing multisensory experiences and thoughtfully planned services, the studio aimed to create an inclusive physical and social environment. Strategies included integrating housing and services for individuals with memory decline within standard buildings, increasing shared community spaces, and facilitating multigenerational interactions.
