Housing Design

Reuse of materials, City of Helsinki 2023

The master level studio was organized in collaboration with the City of Helsinki. The task was to conceptualize and design a housing quarter in Meri-Rastila using reused building parts, consisting of two separate buildings around a shared yard. The concept and architectural design aimed to utilize the potential of the most significant construction waste streams, testing how circular design differs from the existing practice: what are the functional, aesthetical, and processual ramifications of circularity for the architectural design process and the resulting housing architecture? The housing architecture was intended to promote social integration by fostering interaction, a sense of community, and preventing segregation.

Housing Design

The Professorship in Housing Design conducts internationally recognized and impactful architectural design and research, applying this knowledge in its teaching. The research and design efforts concentrate on two main areas: housing design quality and circular construction, with a vision for the future of housing, particularly in the Nordic region. Since 2022, the team has been led by Assistant Professor Antti Lehto
